We are saddened by the news that our friend and colleague Ghanimat Azhdari died in a plane crash on 8 January 2020 in Iran. Ghanimat was a remarkable young leader in biodiversity conservation and indigenous rights. She spent years in promoting land rights and empowering indigenous nomadic tribes in Iran to create sustainable ways of governing their territories. Ghanimat worked with nomadic tribes to map their customary territories and document traditional way of life. Ghanimat worked for CENESTA and was a highly respected ICCA Consortium Council member. She participated in several PAR projects as a mapping and land use expert.
