The Use of Agrobiodiversity by Indigenous and Traditional Agricultural Communities in: Adapting to Climate Change

On 18 May 2010, during a SBSTTA14 side event, the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research (PAR) released a Synthesis Paper titled “The Use of Agrobiodiversity by Indigenous and Traditional Agricultural Communities in: Adapting to Climate Change“.

Synthesis papers are published by PAR to summarise existing knowledge on a topic and to point to new research needed. The  side event on “Coping with Climate Change: How are Indigenous Peoples and Rural Communities Using Agrobiodiversity” provided an opportunity for representatives of indigenous groups and rural communities to discuss their experiences related to the use of agrobiodiversity, its role in how to best contribute to adaptation and mitigation. This new publication describes the findings of this work. During the side event PAR delivered a real tour de force on the stewardship role of indigenous peoples and local communities in agriculture helping to stimulate interactions between scientists and farmers.

The sysnthesis paper is indeed very indsightful and I agree completely that there is a need to urgently study the socio-economic and the political dymensions of using the indigenous knowledge as a method of adaptation. I myself am working on the adaptive capacities of farmers in the SAT regions of India and would be more than happy to share my ideas and work on the same.

This publication would help my organization fashion out programmes addressing climate change in Ghana. It is a good resource.
